Guide to Using Carbon Offsets

The Stockholm Environment Institute provides a guide for companies, organizations, and individuals on the responsible use of carbon offsets within voluntary greenhouse gas reduction strategies to help avert dangerous climate change.

• To maintain a 50% chance of avoiding the worst effects of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that human-caused carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions must be reduced by half by 2030, with other greenhouse gas emissions also reduced considerably.
• Achieving the goal of avoiding the worst climate effects requires CO2 emissions to reach "net zero" by 2050, meaning emissions are balanced with removals, necessitating global action from governments, businesses, and civil society.
• Carbon offsets are identified as a tool that, when used responsibly, can accelerate action to prevent dangerous climate change and assist companies and organizations in meeting emission reduction goals beyond incremental steps.
