Challenges and opportunities for upgrading the avocado value chain in East Africa

This report examines the sustainability of the avocado value chain in East Africa, specifically regarding exports to the European Union, and identifies the requirements for smallholder farmers to transition to sustainable practices.

• The avocado value chain is a significant driver of foreign exchange earnings, rural development, and economic growth in East Africa. There is a current shift toward sustainable practices to protect the environment, improve smallholder farmer livelihoods, and ensure market entry and product integrity within global trade.
• Smallholder farmers and producers face barriers to sustainable transitions that can be addressed through market-focused policy development, capacity building and training for climate-smart farming, and improved access to affordable finance.
