Deforestation policies do not reduce degradation in the Amazon

The research finds that conservation policies in the Brazilian Amazon that successfully reduced deforestation generally failed to reduce forest degradation, which continues to impact carbon stocks, biodiversity, and ecosystem services.

• Public and private deforestation policies in the Brazilian Amazon, including supply chain policies, have generally failed to reduce anthropogenic forest degradation despite successfully reducing deforestation.
• Current conservation strategies focusing solely on deforestation control are insufficient for preserving biodiversity, carbon stocks, and forest-dependent livelihoods because they do not address degradation drivers such as fire, logging, and fragmentation.
• There is a critical need for policies that explicitly target degradation and for governments and companies to incorporate forest degradation emissions into their emission reduction goal evaluations.
