This guide, produced by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, outlines the interconnected nature of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, pollution, and social injustice. Inspired by Pope Francis's encyclical 'Laudato si', it calls for a fundamental shift from an exploitative relationship with the planet to one of care and stewardship, emphasizing the need for systemic economic changes and the protection of the most vulnerable populations.

• The current climate crisis is driven by economic and social systems reliant on fossil fuels, with greenhouse gases produced by the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas for industry, transport, and heating, as well as through deforestation and intensive agriculture.
• Climate change is causing more frequent and intense droughts, storms, and floods, leading to food and water shortages. By the middle of the century, 150 million people living in low-lying areas are expected to see their lands submerged due to rising sea levels.
• Global biodiversity is in a state of crisis due to industrialization, mass consumption, and agricultural changes. Life in lakes and rivers has decreased by 84%, and the Amazon rainforest risks transforming into a dry, shrubby landscape within the next 50 years if deforestation continues.
• Water scarcity and pollution are critical global issues, with approximately 4 billion people facing severe water shortages for at least one month per year. Additionally, 3.6 billion people live with inadequate sanitation, and 1.7 billion lack basic sanitation facilities.
• Air pollution is a widespread health risk, with 9 out of 10 people breathing polluted air. Indoor air pollution, caused by burning coal, wood, and dung for cooking and heating, results in at least 3 million deaths annually, disproportionately affecting women and children.
• Industrial agriculture is unsustainable, contributing to approximately one-third of greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of fertile soil and biodiversity. While small-scale farms produce most of the world's food, hunger is increasing in over 50 countries while one-third of all food is wasted.
• Overconsumption, particularly by the wealthiest 20% of the population who use 80% of global resources, has led to severe environmental degradation. A primary example is plastic pollution, with over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently floating in the oceans.
• Environmental crises are inextricably linked to social injustice, as those who contribute least to the damage often suffer the most. By 2050, over 140 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America may be forced to migrate due to climate impacts.
