User perceptions, adoption and use of ethanol fuel cookstoves in Maputo, Mozambique

The research examines the adoption of ethanol stoves in Maputo, finding that while users appreciate the convenience and cleanliness compared to charcoal, adoption is low (17%) and often replaces other clean fuels like LPG or electricity rather than charcoal. High costs, poor fuel quality, and design flaws are primary barriers to sustained use.

• Ethanol stove usage in the surveyed households is low, with only 17% currently using them, 12% having discontinued use, and 71% having never used them.
• Despite positive perceptions regarding cooking time, convenience, and cleanliness compared to charcoal, ethanol stoves appear to replace other clean cooking technologies, such as LPG or electricity, rather than replacing charcoal.
• The primary factors discouraging the use of ethanol stoves include high initial and operational costs, poor fuel quality, unreliable supply, and malfunctions resulting from poor stove design.
