User perceptions, adoption and use of ethanol fuel cookstoves in Maputo, Mozambique

This research paper examines the barriers to the adoption and use of ethanol fuel cookstoves in Maputo, Mozambique, finding that while users value the technology's convenience and cleanliness, high costs and poor quality have led to low adoption and high discontinuation rates.

• In the surveyed households in Maputo, ethanol stoves are used by approximately 17%, while 12% of households stopped using them and 71% have never used them.
• Despite positive perceptions regarding cooking time, cleanliness, and ease of use compared to charcoal, ethanol stoves appear to replace other clean technologies like LPG or electricity rather than replacing charcoal. Adoption is hindered by high fuel prices, low fuel quality, poor accessibility, and stove malfunctions resulting from poor design.
• To increase the effective uptake of ethanol, the study suggests addressing high initial and operational costs, unreliable fuel supply, and poor stove design, while using awareness campaigns to highlight health and safety benefits.
