Just Transition towards Bioeconomy

The analysis finds that current bioeconomy transitions in Brazil, India, and Indonesia often promote unjust production systems that benefit agribusiness while marginalizing traditional communities and local populations.

• While the bioeconomy is framed as a way to replace fossil fuels and promote circular economies and job creation, the actual implementation has largely benefited agribusiness and fostered unjust production systems. These systems are characterized by uneven distribution of benefits and burdens, exclusionary governance regarding resource use, and a lack of accountability for damages caused to local populations and traditional communities.
• The expansion of bio-based sectors is occurring alongside existing injustices and the creation of new ones, contradicting the stated goals of rural livelihood support and socioeconomic improvement. Consequently, a truly just bioeconomy transition must integrate fossil fuel substitution with sustainable land use and farming.
