Minimum Share of Production

This guide explains the 'Minimum Share of Production' variable within the Stockholm Environment Institute's energy-system-optimization tools, which ensures a specific process supplies at least a defined percentage of a fuel's total annual production regardless of cost.

• The Minimum Share of Production variable defines the smallest percentage of a fuel's total annual production that a specific process must provide within a Transformation module. It is used to model policy or operational mandates such as domestic-supply targets, must-run obligations, or take-or-pay commitments, forcing the system to use a technology even if cheaper alternatives are available.
• The variable defaults to 0 and is expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100, which can be adjusted by year and scenario using static values, conditional logic (If), or linear interpolation (Interp).
• There are three primary constraints when using this variable: it is only visible in partial and energy-system-optimization scenarios; it cannot exceed the 'Maximum Share of Production' for the same process and year; and the sum of all minimum shares for a specific fuel in a given year must not exceed 100%.
