Biofuels and their potential to aid the UK towards achieving emissions reduction policy targets

This research paper evaluates the potential of biofuels to help the UK meet emission reduction targets set in the Low Carbon Transition Plan (LCTP) and EU obligations, using a hybrid life-cycle assessment across four scenarios.

• Biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil and bioethanol from sugarbeet provide the highest potential for emissions savings compared to fossil fuel equivalents. In one scenario, a 10% biofuel market share by 2020 resulted in a maximum emission savings of 4.1%.
• To reach the 6% emissions saving target proposed in the Low Carbon Transition Plan (LCTP) using the current biofuel feedstock mix, biofuels would need to occupy 23.8% of the transport fuels market by 2020.
