Geographic Mapping

This guide describes the Geographic Mapping screen in LEAP, which allows users to create named lists of raster-based GIS data sets to allocate emissions to grid squares for visualization in interactive maps.

• The Geographic Mapping screen enables the creation of named lists of raster (grid)-based GIS data sets, which are used to allocate emissions to grid squares for display in the Results View via Gridded Map charts.
• LEAP supports various GIS file formats, including GeoTIFF (GTIFF), ESRI ASCII (ASC), ESRI Binary (BIN), Multiresolution Seamless Image Database (MrSID), GIF, JPEG, STDS, and PAUX files, with NetCDF (NC) support planned for a future version.
• LEAP automatically re-scales, clips, and normalizes data sets to a common resolution for allocating energy and emissions results, regardless of the original resolutions or X/Y corner locations of the selected data sets.
• Map display capabilities are limited by the software version: the 32-bit version of LEAP is restricted to maps of up to 50 by 50 cells, while the 64-bit version can support maps up to 300 x 300 cells.
• The document identifies several providers of GIS data for LEAP analyses, including SEDAC (NASA), ESRI Data & Maps, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Data Explorer, and MIT.
