Land-Based Resources

This guide describes the land-based resource modeling capabilities within the Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP), specifically its ability to assess land-use change, biomass energy strategies, and the availability of renewable resources.

• LEAP provides tools for modeling land-use and land-use change, which are currently applied to Biomass Energy Strategies (BESTs) in several African countries and serve as a basis for future greenhouse gas mitigation assessments in the forestry sector.
• The software allows users to define land conversions between different types to account for activities such as logging-induced deforestation, agricultural expansion, and reforestation, while also tracking wood supplies generated by land clearances.
• LEAP can model the availability of biomass, wind, and solar resources per unit of land area, accounting for regional demand, transport of wood fuels, and various supply types including sustainable, unsustainable, and formal harvesting regimes, while considering land accessibility and protection.
