Serious Game for Participatory Watershed Management Colombia

This research paper describes the use of a Serious Game (SG) developed by SEI researchers and Corpocaldas to facilitate the coproduced creation of a watershed management plan for the Campoalegre River basin in Colombia, aiming to overcome knowledge gaps and conflicts of interest among stakeholders.

• Multi-stakeholder participation in watershed management is often hindered by a lack of monitoring and baseline data, which prevents stakeholders from understanding the watershed's current state and leads to conflicts of interest where individual decisions ignore broader impacts.
• The implementation of a Serious Game (SG) in the Campoalegre River basin provided an interactive platform that allowed local actors and decision-makers to understand the structure of the watershed management plan and prioritize actions according to social, economic, and climatic conditions.
• The use of the Serious Game resulted in stakeholders showing a better understanding of the basin, which led to increased participation, open debate, and the proposal of actions that can inform water management planning policies.
