Monitoring offshore environmental impacts of trade

This policy brief urges G20 nations to address the fragmented state of monitoring 'offshore impacts'—the environmental consequences of commodity trade in production locations—by improving data disclosure, government capacity, and international collaboration to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss.

• Frameworks designed to monitor overseas environmental impacts are essential for reducing biodiversity loss and mitigating climate change, yet they are currently underused and fragmented.
• The primary obstacles to the effectiveness of these monitoring frameworks are a lack of coherence and insufficient government capacity to implement them.
• The policy brief proposes that G20 countries leverage their position as major trading nations to improve monitoring through four strategic actions: increasing international awareness and adoption of existing programs, improving data disclosure, strengthening government organizational capacity, and collaborating on the development and sharing of best practices.
