PROVIDING CLEAN POWER TO HEALTH FACILITIES IN SIERRA LEONE

The Sierra Leone Healthcare Electrification Project, managed by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and funded by the UK, is replacing diesel generator reliance with solar PV and battery storage in health facilities. Following a Market Assessment and Roadmap, the project initially equipped six hospitals in Freetown, Kambia, Masanga, Kabala, and Bonthe with over 0.6 MWp of solar capacity, reducing diesel usage by 58% to 99%. The project has since expanded to include an additional hospital and 25 community health centres, while providing technical training to young women in the renewable energy sector.

• Sierra Leone faces severe energy poverty, with 95% of rural residents and nearly 50% of urban residents lacking electricity connections, leading to an over-reliance on expensive and polluting diesel fuels.
• There is a significant funding gap for healthcare energy, with over 1,000 health facilities requiring an estimated USD 64 million investment for complete or back-up power solutions.
• The first phase of the project installed more than 0.6 MWp of solar PV capacity across six hospitals located in Freetown, Kambia, Masanga, Kabala, and Bonthe, resulting in a reduction of diesel generator usage between 58% and 99%.
• The project has expanded its scope to include one additional hospital and 25 community health centres, and it incorporates a social component by providing solar PV implementation training to a first cohort of twelve young women.
