DISPLACING PETROL & DIESEL GENERATORS WITH SOLAR IN NIGERIA
Summary
This case study describes the 'Stand-Alone Solar for Productive Use' (SSPU) programme in Nigeria, managed by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) through the Universal Energy Facility (UEF). The programme uses results-based grants to encourage clean energy companies to replace polluting petrol and diesel generators with solar-battery systems for businesses and services.
Key insights
- The Universal Energy Facility (UEF) launched the 'Stand-Alone Solar for Productive Use' (SSPU) programme in Nigeria in 2022 to replace gasoline and diesel generators with solar-battery systems. The programme aims to improve energy access, combat climate change, and promote economic productivity and job creation.
- SEforALL mobilized an initial USD 10 million in funding, which was used to sign grant agreements in February 2023 with ten renewable energy companies. This funding is intended to support the deployment of more than 3,500 electricity connections in Nigeria.
- The SSPU programme saw significant initial demand, with applications from project developers to provide over 25,000 solar battery connections. Such a deployment is estimated to avoid more than 33,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) greenhouse gas emissions annually. Additionally, 20 qualified companies remain on a 'wait-list' for projects that could provide 22,000 more connections over the next two years.
- The UEF is a multi-donor facility established by SEforALL with partners including The Rockefeller Foundation, UKaid, USAID, GIZ, Shell Foundation, Good Energies Foundation, the Carbon Trust, and the Africa Minigrid Developers Association. The SSPU programme specifically receives support from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), the IKEA Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
