OPTIMIZING INVESTMENT IN MALAWI’S ENERGY FUTURE
Summary
This case study describes the development of the Malawi Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) Tool by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet. The tool provides a data visualization platform and geospatial analytics to help the Malawian government and private sector identify the least-cost solutions for achieving universal energy access by 2030, specifically targeting electricity and clean cooking.
Key insights
- Energy access in Malawi is among the lowest in Sub-Saharan Africa, with only 15 percent of the population electrified and 1 percent having access to clean cooking solutions.
- The Malawi Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) Tool is an online, interactive data visualization platform designed to help policymakers and the private sector achieve universal energy access by 2030 using least-cost strategies.
- The IEP tool analyzes a variety of sustainable energy technologies to meet SDG7 objectives, including grid expansion, mini-grids, solar home systems, and clean cooking solutions.
- A specific module of the IEP focused on health-facility electrification and medical cold-chain energy for COVID-19 vaccinations was used by GIZ to install solar-battery systems at 93 health facilities in Malawi.
- The project's findings on clean cooking led to a revision of Malawi's Energy Compact to the United Nations and influenced the design of a subsequent IEP partnership with the Government of Madagascar.
