Increasing access to clean cooking in Rwanda

This case study examines Rwanda's efforts to increase access to clean cooking solutions through political will and private sector mobilization, while contextualizing the broader challenge of declining finance and rising numbers of people without clean cooking access in Sub-Saharan Africa.

• In Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people lacking access to clean cooking has increased by 275 million in recent years, reaching a total of 860 million people, which represents approximately 70 percent of the region's population.
• Finance for clean cooking decreased by 5%, falling from USD 32 million in 2013-14 to USD 30 million in 2015-16. This is significantly lower than the USD 4.4 billion annual investment required by 2030 to address the issue affecting three billion people.
