Gender and Energy Compact

The Gender and Energy Compact is a coalition formed by UNIDO, ENERGIA, and GWNET, with support from several governments, to promote a gender-responsive energy transition. The initiative focuses on ensuring women have equal opportunities to lead and benefit from the transition, as well as equal access to sustainable energy services, aiming for specific outcomes by 2030 to support SDG7 and SDG5.

• The Gender and Energy Compact is a coalition established by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy (ENERGIA), and the Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition (GWNET), with financial or political support from the governments of Canada, Ecuador, Iceland, Kenya, Nepal, and Sweden.
• The coalition is committed to two primary goals: ensuring women have equal opportunities to lead, participate in, and benefit from a just and sustainable energy transition, and ensuring women have equal access to and control over sustainable energy products and services.
• The Compact identifies five specific intended outcomes: the elimination of energy and time poverty and drudgery for women; the adoption of gender-responsive energy transition policies by countries and regions; increased access to finance and resources for women-owned and -led businesses; the creation of career advancement and decent employment for women in the energy sector; and the improvement of sex-disaggregated data and tools for gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation.
• Signatories to the Compact are required to submit individual Energy Compacts detailing their specific organizational commitments through 2030 to support Sustainable Development Goal 7 (universal access to sustainable energy) and Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality).
