Least Developed Countries (LDCs) call for the inclusion of “sustainable energy for all” as a global goal in the 2015 Development Agenda

A Co-Chairs’ Communiqué from a high-level event held on 23 September 2013 at the United Nations, where leaders from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Norway called for the inclusion of "sustainable energy for all" as a global goal in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

• There is a significant "energy gap" in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), where 80% of the population lacks electricity and 90% lacks access to modern cooking fuels. Specifically, only 27% of urban residents and 3% of rural residents in LDCs have access to modern fuels. More than half of the 1.3 billion people globally without electricity live in LDCs.
• The Co-Chairs advocate for "sustainable energy for all" to be established as a common global goal within the Post-2015 Development Agenda, arguing that energy is the "golden thread" linking poverty eradication and socio-economic transformation. They suggest using the three objectives of theSeforSSSeforALL—universal energy access, increased efficiency, and renewable energy—as a framework for this goal.
