Rift Valley Energy powers economic development with rural electricity network in Tanzania

Rift Valley Energy established a 4-megawatt hydro-power station and a subsequent 2.4-megawatt wind farm to provide reliable electricity to businesses, households, and institutions in Tanzania's Mufindi district and surrounding regions, reducing dependence on an intermittent national grid.

• Rift Valley Energy implemented an 'ABC model' for its projects, prioritizing electricity supply first to anchor customers like the national utility TANESCO, then to other businesses or industrial operations, and finally to local communities.
• The Mwenga Hydro and Rural Electrification Project, commissioned in 2012 with support from the European Union and the Rural Energy Agency, created a rural distribution network of over 450 kilometres of power lines serving 32 villages and 4,700 connections, including households, SMEs, three hospitals, 20 health stations, and 35 schools.
• To address seasonal generation drops in hydro power during the dry season, Rift Valley Energy launched a 2.4-megawatt wind farm near Usokami Village in June 2020, creating the first hydro- and wind-fuelled rural network in Tanzania.
