Report on the Launch of the South African APRM Youth Submission
Summary
The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and Jasoro Consulting launched the South African APRM Youth Submission on 26 May 2021. The submission resulted from a process starting in August 2020 involving over 100 youth volunteers across all provinces who identified nine key governance issues. The South African APRM National Governing Council (NGC) indicated that these inputs will form the basis of a dedicated youth section in the NGC's Country Self-Assessment Report.
Key insights
- The SAPS Project followed a structured development process from August 2020 to May 2021, involving over 100 youth volunteers nationwide. The process included a Pre-Planning Workshop, a Sensitisation Workshop in September 2020, the formation of nine thematic Working Groups, the commissioning of a background paper, and a Validation Workshop in February 2021.
- The youth participants identified nine priority governance issues for their submission: youth political participation, social cohesion and inclusion, peace and security, health and social services, economic empowerment, institutional planning, land and housing, access to quality basic and higher education, and climate change.
- The South African APRM National Governing Council (NGC) intends to use the SAPS Youth Submission as the foundation for a dedicated youth section within the NGC's Country Self-Assessment Report.
- The CEO of the Continental APRM Secretariat highlighted a critical need for substantive youth participation across all APRM member states, noting that over 600 million young Africans are currently unemployed and inadequately educated.
