BOTSWANA APRM POPULAR SENSITISATION (BAPS) PROJECT Report of the Civil Society APRM Submission Launch

This report documents the April 20, 2021, virtual launch of the Civil Society APRM Submission, a result of the Botswana APRM Popular Sensitisation (BAPS) Project. The project, a collaboration between the Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO) and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), aimed to integrate civil society perspectives into Botswana's African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process.

• The BAPS project established a CSO Working Group that identified 12 priority governance issues for the submission: Human Rights, Separation of Powers, Public Service and Decentralisation, Citizen Participation and Economic Inclusion, Transparency and Accountability, Vulnerable Groups, Education, Sustainable Development and Natural Resource Management, Access to Land and Infrastructure, Food Security, Crime and Security, and Research and Development and Foreign Policy.
• The project included a Sensitisation Workshop featuring resource persons from the APRM Secretariat and representatives from Zambia and Namibia to share expertise and experiences from their own completed APRM processes.
• Dr. Kaelo Molefhe, Advisor to the President of Botswana's department of Governance, stated that many of the recommendations within the BAPS submission will be integrated into the country's constitutional review process.
• The 'Vulnerable Groups' section of the submission focused on marginalized populations, including women, children, youth, indigenous communities, the LGBTQI+ community, disabled individuals, the elderly, and people living with HIV in Botswana, using literature and diverse perspectives to promote inclusivity.
• Following the launch, BOCONGO intends to disseminate the submission to various stakeholders to increase public awareness and facilitate further engagement on the report.
