African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Sensitisation Project in Namibia (ASPIN) Civil Society Working Group Meeting

On 06 September 2018, the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) convened a meeting in Windhoek, Namibia, to review the progress of the APRM Sensitisation Project in Namibia (ASPIN). The meeting focused on the development of a civil society submission to the APRM, following Namibia's accession to the mechanism in January 2017. Participants discussed 11 specific draft submissions covering governance, social, and environmental issues, and planned a validation workshop for late October 2018.

• The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a voluntary process that focuses on four main thematic areas: Socio-Economic Development, Corporate Governance, Economic Governance and Management, and Democracy and Political Governance.
• As part of the ASPIN process, Namibian civil society identified 12 governance issues for inclusion in its APRM submission during a July meeting.
• Draft submissions were presented on 11 specific topics: Youth Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty, Education, Health, Gender Based Violence, Land Reform, Corruption, Environmental Sustainability, Access to Information, Separation of Powers, and Lack of Policy Coherence. Additional submissions are anticipated regarding corporate citizenship and natural resource governance.
• The project has engaged in discussions with several Namibian government entities, including President Geingob’s advisors, the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, both houses of parliament, and the National Planning Committee.
• A validation workshop for the final draft submission is scheduled for 23 or 24 October 2018 in Windhoek, following the circulation of the draft to civil society.
