NETUMBO NANDI NDAITWAH, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COOPERATION DURING THE AFRICAN PEER REVIEW MECHANISM SENSITIZATION PROJECT IN NAMIBIA CIVIL SOCIETY TRAINING WORKSHOP

A keynote statement delivered by Hon. Christine //Hoebes on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia during a civil society training workshop on April 17, 2018. The speech outlines Namibia's accession to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the required national institutional frameworks for its implementation, and the broader challenges and goals of the APRM across the African continent.

• The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a voluntary self-monitoring initiative designed to promote democracy, the rule of law, and good political, economic, and corporate governance. Since its start in 2003, 37 countries have voluntarily adhered to the mechanism.
• Namibia acceded to the APRM in January 2017 and is currently establishing the necessary national structures to support the process. These include an African Peer Review Focal Point at the ministerial level, an autonomous and inclusive National Governance Council, and an independent National Secretariat.
• The APRM's operational scope has expanded to include a monitoring and evaluation role for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030 and the African Union Agenda 2063.
• The APRM faces significant challenges, including funding constraints, limited capacity, and the difficulty of ensuring that member countries undergo their peer reviews in a timely manner.
