2015 SAIIA Sasol Environmental Sustainability Project (ESP)

The 2015 SAIIA Sasol Environmental Sustainability Project (ESP) is an educational competition for South African Grade 10-12 learners designed to build knowledge of environmental sustainability through research, presentations, and youth negotiations.

• The Environmental Sustainability Project (ESP) is a competition for South African youth in Grades 10-12 that aims to provide knowledge on local and international environmental sustainability issues. The programme is structured in three parts: the writing of a research paper (up to 12 pages), provincial or regional presentations of findings, and participation in youth negotiation sessions at the SAIIA Young Leaders Conference in December.
• Research papers must be written by teams of three and focus on one of three main themes: Biodiversity, Climate Change, or Sustainable Development. These themes must be paired with a specific topic, such as Energy, Freshwater, or Air pollution and air quality. Each paper must include one local case example from the learner's community, city, or province, and one international case example from outside South Africa.
• The 2015 programme timeline includes educator and learner workshops in April and May across the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga. School registration was due by 11 May 2015, with final research papers due by 21 July 2015. The process culminates in the SAIIA Young Leaders Conference from 6-11 December 2015 at Wits University in Johannesburg, where participants draft the 2015 SAIIA Young Leaders Declaration for UN and government officials in Pretoria.
