South Africa and Naval Power at the Millennium

A statement by South African Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota outlining the South African Navy's role in supporting an 'African Renaissance' through secondary functions such as peace support, environmental protection, border control, and disaster relief.

• The South African Navy is expected to support the goal of an African Renaissance by performing secondary functions beyond sovereign defence. These tasks include peace support missions, environmental management and protection, policing, border-line control (including fishery transgressions), combating illegal immigration and narcotics smuggling, diplomatic ship visits, and disaster response operations such as search and rescue, transport, medical support, and crisis management.
