Africa's Tsunami: Turning the Tide of AIDS

This report examines the national AIDS control programmes of Botswana, Senegal, and Uganda to identify models of good practice for fighting the pandemic in Africa, a continent that accounted for approximately 64% of new global HIV/AIDS infections in 2005.

• In 2005, Africa accounted for approximately 64% of all new global HIV/AIDS infections.
• Botswana is identified as one of Africa's top economic performers, yet it has experienced the highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS on the continent.
• Senegal and Uganda, despite being very poor countries with low human development index rankings, maintained infection rates below 2% and 15%, respectively, for most of the period for which statistics were available.
