The Expansion of Regional Supermarket Chains: Changing Models of Retailing and the Implications for Local Supplier Capabilities in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe

This report examines the expansion of South African and other SADC supermarket chains across Southern Africa, analyzing the drivers of this growth, the retail models used, and the resulting impacts on local suppliers and regional trade.

• The expansion of supermarkets in Africa during the early 2000s was primarily driven by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from wealthier African nations, alongside socio-economic factors including rising urbanization, the entry of women into the workforce, increased per capita income, the growth of the middle class, and improvements in infrastructure and transport economies.
• South African chains including Shoprite, Pick n’ Pay, Spar, Woolworths, and Fruit & Veg City expanded regionally by utilizing centralized procurement and focusing on dry, processed foods to achieve economies of scale, which in turn increased food exports from South Africa to the region.
• There is a shifting trend where other SADC country chains are now expanding throughout Southern Africa, exemplified by Botswana's Choppies expanding into South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. However, expansion is hindered by local content policies and the high investment required for advertising and the logistics of perishable goods.
• Increased industrialization and the presence of supermarkets in the DRC have enabled Zambia to begin exporting cereals, candles, detergents, and soaps to the DRC.
