Intégrer l'enseignement de la gouvernance dans l'enseignement universitaire en Afrique : perspectives, défis et leçons

This research paper discusses the necessity of integrating governance education into African universities to support national and continental development, noting a disconnect between the recognized importance of good governance and the current state of higher education infrastructure and policy focus.

• Higher education in many African countries is facing a crisis characterized by deteriorating standards, dilapidated physical infrastructure, insufficient equipment, and declining government budgetary and political support, despite the expectation that the sector produce high-quality graduates and cutting-edge research for national and continental development.
• While good governance is viewed as a prerequisite for achieving development goals at national, continental, and international levels, policy and institutional reforms in many countries focus primarily on the economic impact of higher education and neglect the aspect of governance.
• Based on a study of eight English-speaking African universities in late 2008 and SAIIA's experience with the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) since 2002, there is a specific need to integrate governance education into higher education from a perspective that extends beyond the national framework to support development initiatives.
