Reiner Lemoine Institut – Electrification planning in Nigeria
Summary
The Reiner Lemoine Institut (RLI) developed electrification plans for five Nigerian states to achieve 100% electrification using a combination of grid extension, solar hybrid mini-grids, and solar home systems. The project addressed challenges such as data scarcity, modelling complexity, and undefined institutional structures through the use of GIS and energy system simulation tools. In cooperation with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), the initiative included capacity-building workshops for stakeholders on data management and energy demand modelling to provide local governments with evidence-based investment and capacity requirements.
Key insights
- The project aimed to identify the most cost-effective electrification paths by comparing three specific options: grid extension, solar hybrid mini-grids, and solar home systems, utilizing GIS and energy system simulation tools.
- The project faced three primary obstacles: a lack of detailed data on existing power infrastructure and electrification status, the technical complexity of modelling hybrid mini-grids versus grid extension, and unclear institutional planning processes.
- The final output of the project consists of draft electrification plans for each of the five states, designed to guide local governments toward 100% electrification by detailing necessary investment needs and additional generation capacity.
