Les Soleils du Garamba

The 'Les Soleils du Garamba' project is a Team Europe-funded initiative to deploy green mini-grid energy infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of Congo to reduce environmental pressures on Garamba National Park and improve regional stability.

• The project aims to connect over 3,000 customers to distributed renewable energy (DRE) by 2026, which is expected to impact 50,000 people. This customer base includes approximately 500 businesses and 300 schools, as well as households and health institutions.
• The green energy infrastructure will have a 1 MWp capacity and generate 2.5 MWh. The project's budget is approximately EUR 10,000,000 and it is expected to avoid about 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
• The initiative seeks to reduce anthropic pressures on Garamba National Park, specifically targeting the reduction of deforestation and poaching by replacing wood and biomass with electricity. It also aims to pacify the region by diversifying economic opportunities and reducing incentives for guerrilla warfare and banditry.
