Women Entrepreneurs as Key Drivers in the Decentralised Renewable Energy Sector: Best Practices and Innovative Business Models

This report by the Alliance for Renewable Electrification (ARE), supported by GET.invest, examines the intersection of gender equality (SDG-5) and affordable, sustainable energy (SDG-7) within the decentralised renewable energy (DRE) sector. It utilizes 17 case studies from ARE members to provide recommendations for DRE companies, civil society organisations, private investors, and international funding partners to implement gender-sensitive approaches across the DRE supply chain.

• The synergy between Sustainable Development Goal 7 (affordable, reliable and sustainable energy) and Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality) is a driver for economic growth and development. Women are noted for their tendency to reinvest earnings into vital services and productive activities within their communities, which further accelerates progress.
• To reach universal energy access by 2030, there is a need for investments, business models, and energy access policies that maximize socio-economic benefits and ensure inclusivity. The report argues that 'gender blind' approaches to energy access risk overlooking a pool of talent and a range of innovative solutions found at the intersection of sustainable economic development, clean energy access, and gender equality.
• The publication uses 17 case studies from ARE Members to demonstrate the critical role of women in sustainable socio-economic development and energy access in rural communities, aiming to inspire gender-sensitive strategies throughout the DRE supply chain.
