Sustain Solar SUSTAIN BOXES™ lighting the way for Malawi’s clinics

A case study on the installation of Sustain Solar SUSTAIN BOXES™ in two Malawian health clinics by International Power Control Systems (IPCS), providing off-grid renewable power for critical medical equipment and testing a sustainable business model.

• Between late 2022 and early 2023, International Power Control Systems (IPCS) installed SUSTAIN BOX™ systems developed by Sustain Solar to provide off-grid renewable power to two health clinics. These systems utilize solar PV and Li-ion batteries to achieve 99% uptime, powering essential medical equipment including vaccine fridges, ventilators, oxygen concentrators, suction pumps, examination lights, and autoclave equipment. These services support maternal and newborn care, vaccine rollout, under-five services, family planning, sexually transmitted/infection treatment, and out-patient department (OPD) services for a population of 52,679 people, with an average of 715 patients per month.
• At the Mindanti Health Centre, the SUSTAIN BOX™ systems provide energy for staff quarters to help improve clinician retention. Additionally, IPCS is testing a scalable "Productive Use of Energy" business model at this facility, which involves selling excess power from the SUSTAIN BOX™ to a paying ward to ensure the long-term reliability of the PV system.
