GERES – Green Business Area, Konseguela, Region of Sikasso (Mali)

This case study describes the 'Green Business Area' in Konseguela, Mali, a pilot project completed in 2016 by GERES. The project provides a dedicated site for rural businesses powered by a 100% renewable energy mini-grid combining solar photovoltaics and locally produced agro-fuels.

• The 'Green Business Area' in Konseguela is a dedicated site hosting 11 local rural businesses powered by a mini-grid with a generation capacity of 12.5 kWp. The energy mix is 100% renewable, utilizing a photovoltaic system and a generator that burns locally produced agro-fuels, which removes the businesses' reliance on fossil fuels.
• The project employs a pricing model that combines the sale of energy with the rental of bioclimatic workspaces. Electricity costs are higher at night than during the day due to the reliance on solar PV.
• The initiative has enabled the introduction of services previously unavailable or too expensive in the area, such as community radio, refrigeration, and a bakery. By the end of its first year of operation, the project supported 7 rural businesses and created 24 direct jobs.
• GERES is working to replicate the 'Green Business Area' model in Benin, Senegal, and Mali, while engaging with rural electrification operators and national authorities to integrate the model into official programs.
