Village Energy powers healthcare in Uganda

Between January and September 2025, Village Energy installed solar-hybrid and off-grid energy systems in 26 Ugandan health centres to address unreliable grid power and blackouts that compromised oxygen therapy. The systems, ranging from 4.6 kWp to 5.8 kWp, enabled oxygen concentrators to operate up to 20 hours per day without grid input, reducing dependence on costly oxygen cylinders and improving neonatal and paediatric care. The project highlighted the importance of remote monitoring, local staff training, and a two-year maintenance warranty for sustainability. Village Energy has since powered over 100 health centres in Uganda.

• Village Energy installed solar-hybrid and off-grid systems in 26 health centres between January and September 2025, with system sizes of 4.6 kWp (generating up to 18.7 kWh/day for two concentrators) and 5.8 kWp (generating up to 23.5 kWh/day for four concentrators).
• The solar systems improved healthcare delivery by allowing oxygen concentrators to run for up to 20 hours daily without grid power, which stabilized oxygen flow in neonatal and paediatric wards and reduced the need for oxygen cylinder refills and patient referrals.
• Key operational learnings from the project include the value of real-time remote monitoring for performance issues, the necessity of local staff training for sustainability, and the role of a two-year warranty and maintenance support in building trust.
