Schneider Electric – Matongo Birthing Clinic Microgrid (Kenya)

A case study on the installation of an 8.7 kW solar and storage microgrid at the Matongo Birthing Clinic in Kisii County, Kenya, which has increased facility-based deliveries to 95% by eliminating power-outage risks.

• United Solar Initiative, in partnership with Curamericas Global, Schneider Electric, and PowerPoint Systems, installed an 8.7 kW solar and storage microgrid at the Matongo Birthing Clinic in Kisii County, Kenya. The system provides backup power to critical loads and has been operational since August 2020.
• The microgrid was implemented to resolve frequent blackouts in remote rural areas of Kenya that previously caused the Matongo dispensary to lose power for hours or days, which discouraged community use of the clinic.
• Following the installation, the facility has seen a reduction in energy costs and a significant increase in facility-based births; 95% of deliveries now occur at the health facility with a skilled birth attendant, compared to a previous state where one in three women preferred home births due to power outage risks.
