Schneider Electric – Matongo Birthing Clinic Microgrid (Kenya)

The Matongo Birthing Clinic in Kenya installed an 8.7 kW solar and storage microgrid to combat frequent power outages that previously deterred patients. Since August 2020, the facility has seen facility-based deliveries increase to 95%, reduced energy costs, and improved 24-hour operational reliability.

• The Matongo Birthing Clinic installed an 8.7 kW solar and storage microgrid provided by Schneider Electric to address frequent blackouts in rural Kenya that previously lasted for hours or days, jeopardising patient health and staff security.
• Since the microgrid went online in August 2020, the clinic has experienced a significant increase in facility-based births, with 95% of deliveries now occurring at the health facility with a skilled attendant, compared to a previous state where one in three women preferred home births due to power outage risks.
• The project has enabled the facility to operate 24 hours a day and has resulted in monthly energy cost savings from the utility company, allowing the clinic to purchase more hospital supplies.
