ProBaMet Project battery disposal guidance for Nigeria

The ProBaMet Project, a partnership involving Oeko-Institut, ARE, SRADev Nigeria, and Platform Lead, has established a positive listing for lead-acid battery recycling in Nigeria to promote responsible waste management and mitigate risks to human health and the environment.

• The Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling (ProBaMet) was established by Oeko-Institut, the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), SRADev Nigeria, and Platform Lead to encourage responsible battery recycling within Nigeria.
• Following an assessment of the lead-acid battery recycling landscape in Nigeria conducted with regulatory agencies, a positive listing was created. Currently, Green Recycling Ltd. is the only entity on this list, representing the sole option for the sound management of used lead-acid batteries in the country.
• Companies in Nigeria's renewable electrification sector are advised to use the ProBaMet listing as a benchmark for future recycling initiatives to avoid the negative impacts on the environment and human health associated with improper battery recycling.
