Suggested Rules of Engagement

A guide by Rocky Mountain Institute providing ten rules of engagement for major employers operating in one-industry towns to improve community relations and operational approvals.

• Major employers in one-industry towns should adopt a 'front-loaded' design process for new facilities or operational changes. This involves collaborating with a diverse range of community members, including critics, during the early development phase to ensure shared ownership of the final design and to reduce costs and time during the approval stage.
• Companies should maintain a permanent, non-company-serving presence in the community to improve employee quality of life, attract staff, and build empathy for when mistakes occur.
• Corporate citizenship should be based on transparency and factual honesty rather than public relations efforts. This includes admitting mistakes immediately, stating facts without excuses, and being transparent about community efforts that also benefit the company.
