Applying Hope in Today’s Tumultuous Times

A statement from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) advocating for 'applied hope' in the face of political uncertainty regarding the energy transition and climate science, emphasizing the global and commercial momentum of sustainable energy.

• The transition to sustainable energy is increasingly irreversible because it is now global, cost-effective, and broadly supported. Renewable energy and electric vehicles have reached a state of being both "technically feasible and commercially viable," with support from global business leaders and a broad U.S. political spectrum for wind and solar power.
• Despite uncertainty created by the U.S. administration, the 2015 Paris agreement remains supported by countries globally, as well as by cities and provinces where energy revolution regulations and implementation occur.
• Business engagement in U.S. renewables remains resilient despite the 2016 election; 67 percent of members in RMI's Business Renewables Center reported the election had no impact on their engagements, and 25 percent stated it would increase their engagement.
• RMI expresses concern that the U.S. government is failing to provide the clarity of direction necessary to enable required investments for the energy transition and that "science, facts, and logical arguments are no longer valued."
