A Radical New Plan for Aviation

This Action Brief from RMI argues that the aviation industry requires a new strategy to meet climate goals, as current emissions are exceeding forecasts and existing offsetting schemes are insufficient.

• Aviation emissions are increasing more rapidly than previously predicted, with carbon dioxide emissions expected to reach 1 gigaton per year by 2020, representing between 3% and 9% of total annual global emissions.
• The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) covers 75% of flights, but these efforts are inadequate for meeting established goals or climate stability targets.
