Unlocking First-of-a-Kind Projects through Clean Industrial Hubs

This report by RMI and the Mission Possible Partnership details the development of clean industrial hubs in California and Texas between August 2022 and December 2024. It examines how these hubs support first-of-a-kind clean industrial projects by creating ecosystems of finance, policy, and community engagement to reduce risk.

• Participation in clean industrial hubs appears to increase the success rate of first-of-a-kind projects; 50% of the 18 projects supported by the Mission Possible Partnership and RMI reached a final investment decision (FID), which is higher than the global average of 20%.
• If all 18 supported projects become operational, they are projected to reduce emissions by 500 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by 2050 and mobilize $34 billion in public and private investment.
• The report identifies six key sectors for first-of-a-kind projects within these hubs: zero-emissions trucking, low-emissions steel, cement and concrete, electrolytic ammonia and methanol (for shipping and chemicals), sustainable aviation fuel, and low-emissions hydrogen.
