Breaking Down Silos: Lessons from Indonesia’s Coal Transition Kick-off

• RMI identifies four primary lessons for transitioning away from fossil fuels while maintaining energy reliability and low costs: solar and storage are the most cost-effective replacements for coal plants retiring by 2030; emissions reductions are only guaranteed if capacity is replaced by clean resources; financial interventions are necessary to de-risk investments and enable just transition assistance; and the use of cheaper clean resources benefits the utility's financial performance.
• To implement a successful transition, RMI recommends three specific actions: conducting joint analyses of coal retirement and clean energy deployment, integrating financial effects into techno-economic and operational planning, and creating an initial retirement roadmap by ranking plants from least to most efficient.
• In 2022, RMI advised the launch of a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) for Indonesia's electricity system, which consists of a $20 billion multilateral financial package intended to accelerate the shift from coal to renewable energy.
