Realizing the Green Jobs Promise - RMI

This report by RMI argues for reframing the concept of 'green jobs' from a simple tradeoff between fossil fuel losses and clean energy gains toward a broader vision of 'regenerative capitalism' and the 'Great Regeneration' to address global inequality and economic instability.

• Analysts, including the International Energy Agency, suggest that market-driven innovation in the transition to a carbon-free economy could generate between two and six green jobs for every fossil fuel job that is lost. Data from the International Labour Organization and the International Renewable Energy Agency indicates that the renewables sector had already created over 12 million jobs by 2021.
• Framing the transition solely as a numerical tradeoff of jobs risks losing political and public support because many people are skeptical of prosperity promises. This skepticism is linked to growing inequality affecting over 70 percent of the global population, driven by four megatrends: international migration, urbanization, technological innovation, and climate change.
• RMI proposes a shift toward 'regenerative capitalism' and a movement called the 'Great Regeneration.' This approach views achieving net-zero carbon emissions as one part of a larger transition to a sustainable economy, moving away from a 'job scarcity mentality' toward 'purpose-inspired economic abundance.'
