Mobilizing Private Capital to Reduce Methane Emissions from Waste in Emerging Markets

The report examines the barriers to private capital investment for waste-sector methane reduction in emerging markets and proposes a framework to identify high-impact, low-risk investment hubs.

• The waste sector contributes roughly 20% of global human-caused methane emissions. While technologies such as landfill gas to energy and anaerobic digestion are proven and used in developed markets, their adoption in emerging economies remains slow.
• A gap exists between the demand for capital and its supply because project developers in emerging markets struggle to create 'bankable' projects that meet the investability requirements of capital providers.
• RMI identifies São Paulo and Bangkok as prime opportunity hubs representing the lowest-risk and highest-impact near-term investments for private financial institutions. Scaling this finance requires de-risking through grant funding, concessional capital, a pipeline of investment-ready projects, and stronger carbon markets to monetize environmental attributes.
