Zero-Carbon Home Heating in China’s Yangtze River Delta Region: Heat Pumps as a Core Solution

This report by RMI examines the potential for zero-carbon home heating in China's Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, identifying heat pumps as an energy-efficient, low-emissions solution to address the lack of heating facilities in southern China.

• The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region is characterized as a densely populated and economically advanced metropolitan area that can serve as a model for zero-carbon heating pathways in southern China, where residents lack the government-provided district heating found in northern China.
• Analysis indicates that over 20 million residents in the YRD region who currently lack home heating systems will require new facilities, leading to a projected increase in heating demand of more than 500 million gigajoules by 2030, which represents 40 percent of the total heating demand from 2020.
• The report identifies heat pumps as a low-emissions and energy-efficient solution for achieving zero-carbon home heating in the YRD region, while also addressing barriers and providing recommendations for their scaling.
