Getting Down to Business: Enabling Action and Enhancing Credibility in Net-Zero Banking Using a Portfolio-Led Approach

This report introduces a portfolio-led approach designed to help banks translate net-zero decarbonization commitments into credible, robust action by providing a framework to assess sectors, geographies, asset classes, and business units.

• The report proposes a portfolio-led approach to help banks move from setting net-zero targets to implementing them, enabling firms to manage stakeholder expectations, evolving guidelines, and complex organizational structures. This approach utilizes a four-pillar framework to identify where (sectors and geographies) and how (asset classes and business units) banks can most effectively support the net-zero transition in the real economy.
• The portfolio-led approach is intended to support the three standard stages of bank progress toward net-zero: strategy design, implementation, and reporting. It allows banks to optimize for their specific traits and influence while adapting to the financing needs and conditions of the real economy across different geographies and sectors.
• The portfolio-led approach is designed to be compatible with and complementary to existing industry frameworks, specifically the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) sectoral target-setting and the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ) guidance on transition plans.
