Prefabricated Zero Energy Retrofit Technologies

A report by RMI's REALIZE initiative, funded by the US Department of Energy, assessing prefabricated, high-performance retrofit technologies in the United States and the Netherlands to enable standardized zero-energy retrofits for multifamily housing.

• The REALIZE initiative conducted a market assessment of prefabricated retrofit technologies in the US and the Netherlands to identify products that allow for a more standardized, integrated approach to zero-energy retrofits through off-site manufacturing. • Energiesprong, a Dutch public-private partnership, has developed a semi-industrialized net-zero energy retrofit package. This approach has been implemented in approximately 5,000 low- and mid-rise multifamily retrofits, with an estimated additional demand of 100,000 multifamily units across Europe.
• RMI's REALIZE initiative intends to catalyze a similar industrialized retrofit approach in the United States, focusing on facade panel and mechanical system innovations for multifamily housing. This effort involves partnerships with federal and state entities, including the US Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, and New York State's RetrofitNY program.
