Is Georgia Power’s New Plan Enough to Reach Net Zero by 2050?

This RMI briefing analyzes Georgia Power's December 2021 20-year energy plan, concluding that while the plan significantly reduces coal reliance, it remains inconsistent with a 1.5°C-aligned pathway and the parent company's 2050 net-zero goal due to continued gas reliance and underestimated load growth.

• Georgia Power's December 2021 20-year energy plan includes closing most coal plants by 2028 and the remainder by 2035, doubling renewable generation, and purchasing existing gas-fired capacity without building new gas plants.
• RMI analysis indicates that Georgia Power is not on a 1.5°C-aligned pathway. Although the company has already met its 2030 target of a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, these reductions are expected to level off by 2035, leaving 2030 projected emissions well above levels required to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
