Development of Transition Finance in Major Asian Economies

This report by RMI provides a comparative review of the development of transition finance ecosystems across major Asian economies to support the decarbonization of emissions-intensive sectors.

• The report analyzes the development of transition finance in Asia by categorizing major economies into three distinct groups: international financial hubs, industrialized powerhouses, and rapidly developing economies, to account for differences in economic structures and market functions.
• Asia has made progress in transition finance through the creation of regulatory coordination mechanisms, pilot programs, dedicated policy guidance, and improved alignment with international standards.
• Several obstacles persist in the regional transition finance landscape, specifically regarding the credibility of transition plans, constraints on bankability, implementation capabilities, and a mismatch between available regional capital and fragmented market systems.
