AG 2022 : première mi-temps alarmante pour le climat

Reclaim Finance reports a decline in shareholder support for ambitious climate resolutions and a contradictory tendency for investors to approve 'pseudo-climate plans' that are incompatible with a 1.5°C warming limit. The organization highlights specific voting trends at European oil and gas majors and calls for a shift toward voting against companies continuing fossil fuel development.

• Support for ambitious shareholder resolutions demanding climate targets aligned with the Paris Agreement or a 1.5°C limit has decreased compared to 2021. For example, support for such a proposal at BP fell from 21% in 2021 to 15% in 2022, and at Equinor, it dropped from 39% in 2021 to 25% in 2022.
• Despite the lack of plans compatible with a 1.5°C limit, shareholders have overwhelmingly approved incomplete climate strategies. Specifically, 83% of Repsol shareholders and 88.5% of BP shareholders validated their respective climate plans, while 97% of Equinor shareholders approved its plan and 97% of ENGIE shareholders approved its strategy.
• There are emerging signs of investor resistance against climate inaction. Climate Action 100+ lead investors have publicly signaled intentions to vote against the climate plans of Equinor and TotalEnergies. Additionally, opposition to climate plans increased at Glencore (24% against in 2022 vs 6% in 2021) and reached a record rejection rate of 37% at Santos.
