WARD COMMITTEES

This guide explains the role, structure, and functioning of ward committees within South African local government, detailing their purpose as bridges between communities and municipal councillors to facilitate public participation in governance and development planning.

• Ward committees serve as a mechanism for community participation in municipal governance, acting as a bridge that allows residents to voice concerns, make recommendations, and receive responses from councillors. They are intended to represent community needs and must not be controlled by political parties.
• Standard operational features of ward committees include membership of up to 10 volunteers who advise the ward councillor, who also serves as the committee chairperson.
